David St-Martin began playing hockey at age 3 and it was obvious the game was a passion, even at that early stage of his life. David became a full-time goalie at around 8 years old, even if his scoring abilities were showing, he wanted to wear the heavy leather gear. David played for competitive teams all those years and then, found himself in the QMJHL. It was the St-Jean Lynx training camp, David didn’t make the team, they chose a future Hart and Vezina trophy winner instead… José Théodore. Knowing how it turned out, who can blame them?
Then playing for bad teams in the Juniors, David finished his minor hockey career and by an unexpected twist of fate, David met an old friend who was just starting as a pro-wrestler. Knowing David was a wrestling fan for years, he invited him to join the class. David went, bringing his whole 140 pounds to the ring (now near 230lbs). One day, somebody no-showed at an event and the nCw asked David to fill in for him after only a few trainings. A Pro-Wrestler’s training usually lasts a year and even over that. After that first match, they kept him, gave him a booking and Chakal was born! Over the last decade, David, now known as Chakal, roamed North America, punching, kicking and body-slaming individuals on wrestling rings. Chakal even went to Japan to main-event a pay-per-view there, won championship belts on many occasions and got cheered and booed by legions of fans.
Chakal left hockey for 7 years during that time, but a friend was missing a goalie for his adult league team. Chakal filled in and got stung at the game again. Bought new gear, started to read on new techniques, went on Bulletin Board about goaltending and start playing more and more. One day, Chakal met someone working for the local semi-pro team and was asked to fill-in for a missing goalie at the training camp. Well, Chakal did not only filled in, he stuck there and even signed a contract. Chakal stayed under contract until the team folded early in the season. Even if he did get a star every game he got involved in, Chakal wasn’t drafted when the league did it’s special draft and his semi-pro career ended at the same time.
Chakal was still wrestling during his semi-pro hockey period, but also, through contacts made on goalie bulletin board, started to do some graphics for Battram Custom Goal Equipment. Then, after a few good ones, got noticed by other manufacturers. Now, the demand is high enough to justify to regroup all his work and give it an official name and website. The Story will continue, but where it will go is still a mystery.
David St-Martin is also a graduate from Ahuntsic College in Graphic Design. He's also a published illustrator, created logos for Les Promotion NCW and created numerous Pro-Wrestling outfits. |
